The "5G Corridor Munich - Prague" project

In 2020 the head of the Bavarian State Chancellery and Minister of State for Federal and European Affairs and Media Dr. Florian Herrmann and the Minister for Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic Doc. Ing. Karel Havlíček, Ph.D., MBA signed the joint declaration of intent for future cooperation in the construction of a 5G Corridor Munich - Prague in order to jointly push digital transformation across borders forward.

What should be achieved?

  • Strengthening cross-border cooperation in the development of common application scenarios for high-speed cellular networks of the fifth generation (5G).
  • Implementation of joint bilateral projects, particularly in scientific, technological and economic cooperation in the application areas of eHealth, Industry 4.0, Connectd Mobility and Smart Regions.
  •  Creation of a 5G corridor between Munich and Prague as an active part of the “Connecting Europe” Facility (CEF) of the EU Commission.

In order to achieve these goals, close cooperation between science, industry, municipalities, state administrations and those involved in cross-border cooperation is crucial.

Action points to achieve the goals:
  • Identify specific 5G application areas of Bavarian-Czech interest relevant to the corridor.
  • Identify potential sources of government funding in Bavaria, Germany, the Czech Republic, and the EU.
  • Formation of working groups of Czech and Bavarian experts on the respective focus topics of eHealth, Industry 4.0, Connected Mobility and Smart Regions.
  • Setting the conditions for the implementation of pilot projects for 5G applications.
  • Consideration of operational and security aspects of the 5G corridor (implementation of the EU toolbox for 5G cybersecurity).

Since uninterrupted coverage with high-speed mobile networks is a necessary condition for establishing 5G applications and solving future problems, the initiation of the first demonstration projects must subsequently go hand in hand with securing the necessary 5G infrastructure. For the period 2021 - 2027, 5G technologies are one of the EU Commission's technological priorities. The 5G Corridor Munich - Prague has the highest potential to become a showcase project for cross-border technological cooperation within the EU.
